Improving tertiary pathways by improving support for prospective students

Stage One: Review of Practice

Stage One includes a review of current practice of the ways in which Year 12 Students in South Australia are supported with post-school decisions by the tertiary education sector, secondary education sector, and government agencies. The review of practice involves multiple methods including literature review, web searches, online surveys and interviews.

Stage One findings will contribute to the refinement of the Year 12 Study Choice model and will also serve to inform the Year 12 Student Survey instrument for the next stage. Stage One research will also be used in the development of the learning framework during Stage Three.

Phase One: Universities in South Australia
The literature and web review has been undertaken throughout the first stage and will be re-visited for any recent updates prior to the final report.

Interviews have been conducted with key university personnel (e.g. recruitment managers) and  data analysis underway.

Phase Two: Government Agencies
Alongside the review of the tertiary sector, a literature and web review has been undertaken to explore what support is provided by both national and state agencies within the scope of career development learning research and resources. If necessary, interviews will be conducted with selected representatives of key organisations (e.g. SATAC) to explore their support for prospective students.

Phase Three: Secondary  Schools in South Australia
The project team will connect with high schools across South Australia to gather data from key staff members and teachers who provide support to Year 12 students with post-school decisions. An on-line broad survey, developed by the team and reviewed by the project advisory group,  will be sent to all SA secondary schools. The survey will provide an opportunity for respondents to volunteer to participate in an interview.

Interviews will be conducted with a selection of approximately 12-15  Year Twelve Career Advisors and Teachers from a cross-section of SA secondary schools.

Survey and interview results will be analysed and discussed with the project advisory group who will add an additional level of evaluation.
